Tesa Lime Shingles and Ridge Tiles

Do you kwow the Tesa Tiles? With the new laminated hip and ridge shingles, finishing the installation of a ridge roof is easier. It is a much simpler process than with the old three-tab shingles. To install the ridge tiles, simply separate them where they are drilled. Then they should be “folded” over the peak and nailed.
Of course, there is much more to the process than that. You have to understand the function of the ridge tiles. In addition, you need to learn how to choose them and how to make the installation look clean and attractive.
Three-Tab Shingles Compared To Laminated Shingles
The ridge cap shingle installation process has changed because roofing market trends have favored a new type of shingle. Three-tab shingles are easy to cut in rows to create a ridge. But, now, roofers and homeowners largely prefer laminated shingles.
Rob Davidson of IKO Canada explains the reasons why. He states, “When I started with IKO more than 20 years ago, three-tab shingles were the most common shingles installed. Since then, laminated shingles have steadily grown in popularity and are now the dominant shingle style by far. Homeowners love their random dimensional look, and contractors like them for their ease of installation.”
Can Architectural Shingles Be Used For Ridge Roofing?
Architectural style shingles should not be used for ridge cap roofing unless they are specifically intended for use on the ridge cap or Tesa Tiles on the roof. Architectural style shingles are thicker than three-tab shingles and are difficult to cut to ridge and Tesa Tiles. You cannot bend architectural style shingles into the proper curve, as the two different layers do not bend in tandem.
If your roofers attempted to use architectural style shingles for the ridge of your roof, they could have two problems. The shingles would not adhere properly and would have a warped and ragged appearance. This poor adhesion would affect their performance and could increase the likelihood of leaks.
All of this is not to say that you should use 3-tab ridge shingles over architectural style shingles. You can buy ridge shingles that are thicker and share the advantages of regular architectural style shingles. You should also be able to find ridge shingles. These will match the unique look, dimension and color of architectural style shingles.
Roofing manufacturers have introduced specific ridge cap shingles made to work with laminated shingle installations that will look great and save you time.
Tesa file and ridge shingles are lightweight and perforated so they can be quickly and neatly split by hand into three or four pieces. They are perfect for speeding up roof installation without compromising the quality of the finished product.
A Bolder Look: Double And High Profile Ridge Cap Shingles.
You can accentuate the ridge and improve the overall appearance of the roof by doubling them. In the standard application, ridge tiles are installed and overlapped one at a time. But if double shingles are installed, the appearance will vary. The top one is placed three-quarters of an inch higher.
This will give the appearance of a richer, thicker ridge or hip roof. The folded look complements the thick, double-layer structure of laminated shingles, giving the entire roof a stronger, more robust appearance.
Choosing A Ridge Cap Shingle Color
Generally, Tesa’s lime and ridge tiles match the color mix used in the roofing field. However, in some markets, Tesa lime and ridge tiles can be a contrasting color, which really frames the roof and accentuates its contour.
Selecting the right color for the ridge tile to match or contrast with the shingles on your roof will make all the difference. This can provide the ideal finishing touch to a properly installed roof.
What Size Nails For Ridge Cap Shingles?
Ridge tiles are installed overlapping the roof shingles. This means that the nails that attach them to the roof must be slightly longer. This ensures that they fully penetrate the additional layers of the roof. They can then be securely anchored to the roof deck. So don’t forget the longer nail coils for the kit. Use at least two-inch nails.
How To Install Ridge Cap Shingles
- Step 1: Make sure the shingles are not too cold. Las tejas serán más fáciles de manejar si se calientan un poco. Muchos contratistas precalientan unos cuantos haces en la cabina de su camión antes de utilizarlos.
- Step 2: Chalk lines should be used to ensure a flawless shingle ridge installation. It should be straight and professional looking. Determine the width of the shingle pieces and draw a line a little less than half that dimension on one side of the ridge peak or tesa file, then align the side of the shingles along that guide.
- Step 3: To install the ridge cap and tesa file shingles on the tesa file, start at the bottom, trimming the first piece so that the corners of the tesa file shingles do not extend into the gutter.
- Step 4: Nail the ridge cap shingle five and five-eighths inches above the adjacent edge, one inch from each edge. It will need to be nailed higher if large ridge cap shingles, such as IKO’s UltraHP, are used.
- Step 5: When installing ridge cap shingles on the ridge of a gable roof, you should start at the end of the ridge opposite the prevailing wind direction for optimum ridge wind resistance.
- Step 6: To finish a shingle ridge roof, the last shingle should be set in concrete. Also cover the exposed nail heads with cement.
- Step 7: If a missing ridge cap shingle needs to be replaced down the line, a pry bar will be needed to gently lift the shingles above the shingle being replaced.
When ridge tiles are installed correctly, they accentuate the roof line. When installed incorrectly, they detract from it. Therefore, it is important to have the right roofers to do the job in the most optimal way possible.
